Powerball, a popular lottery game in the United States, has created another historic win after an unnamed player won $1.08 billion. This win follows a draw made on Wednesday, July 19, 2023, where the winning numbers were 7, 10, 11, 13, 24, and Powerball 24.
This epic win is the third largest in the lottery game's history. It's also the sixth-largest lottery win ever recorded in the United States. Currently, Edwin Castro's $2.04 billion win recorded in November 2022 is the biggest Powerball win. The latest win also trails the $1.58 billion win in 2016.
Funny enough, the ticket winner has yet to claim the win. According to Powerball, the winning ticket holder can claim the jackpot in a lump sum payment of $558.1 million or annual payments for 30 years until they claim the entire prize.
The California Lottery claims the lucky player purchased the ticket at Las Palmitas Mini Market in downtown Los Angeles, United States. The store will bag nearly $1 million to sell the winning ticket. The regulated lottery operator has already advised players who participated in the draw to confirm their tickets.
Powerball's press release confirmed that 36 tickets were sold in 16 states nationwide. Interestingly, the big winner also matched all five white balls to earn what will typically be a $1 million reward. Seven of all the sold tickets were from California, where non-jackpot winnings total $448,750.
The latest multi-dollar millionaire had to beat some long odds to win the payout. Powerball's website states that the odds of winning the jackpot are 1 in 292.2 million.
This lottery game has endured 38 consecutive draws without registering a jackpot winner. The last jackpot win happened on April 19 drawing, when a ticket in Ohio matched all six numbers to win the jackpot reward of $252.6 million.
